WORD RECORDS HISTORY:
Word Records was founded in 1951 when a young
sportscaster for a local Waco, Texas radio station named Jarrell
McCracken recorded a play-by-play description with sound effects based on an
article by Jimmy Allen
of a football game between The Forces of Evil coached by
Satan and Christianity
coached by Jesus Christ, called
The Game Of Life,
and played in the Stadium of Life.
Word became successful to the point that after it
was sold by McCracken in 1974, it was variously owned through the years
by ABC/Capitol Cities, Thomas Nelson Publishers, Gaylord Entertainment,
and Warner Music Group who purchased Word for $84.1
million in December 2001.
Other labels from Word included their first contemporary label,
Myrrh,
which was started by Billy Ray Hearn in 1972,
their Southern Gospel label,
Canaan, founded by
Marvin Norcross in 1965, and
Dayspring in 1975.
In recent years, Word Entertainment has re-launched their
legendary Southern Gospel label, Canaan Records,
and Myrrh as a worship label.
