HISTORY:
In 1981, with only $500 in hand to start his new business,
Jim Van Hook opened the doors to
Brentwood Music.
Within a few years time, he turned his investment into a multi-million dollar corporation.
By the mid-1990s, the company was worth $19 million.
In 1994, New York-based
Zomba purchased Brentwood Music.
In June 1997, the capital-infused company had
greatly expanded through the purchases of
Benson Music Group and
Reunion Records.
This massive growth prompted the establishment of
Provident Music Group
to more adequately umbrella the corporation’s many facets, including its publishing arm,
Brentwood-Benson Music Publishing.
In September 2002, German media giant
Bertelsmann AG
received approval from the European Union to complete it’s $2.74 billion purchase of
Zomba, which then became a unit of
BMG, Bertelsmann AG’s worldwide music business.
Brentwood-Benson Music Publishing became a part of BMG Music Publishing.
In July 2004,
BMG merged with
Sony Music and became
Sony BMG Music Entertainment.
In 2007,
BMG Music Publishing, of which
Brentwood-Benson Music Publishing is a part of, was acquired by
Universal Music Publishing Group.
In August 2008, Sony
purchased Bertelsmann AG’s 50% ownership in Sony BMG for $1.2 billion dollars.
The company was renamed Sony Music Entertainment Inc.
